How the interview runs
Six stages, in the order a real personality test runs
- 1
Give the board your DAF
Upload your Detailed Application Form as a PDF or photos, or fill a short form. You check every field before the interview starts.
- 2
Choose Hindi or English
The whole board speaks the language you will use on the day. In Hindi, mixing in English terms is understood, as it is in the real room.
- 3
Face a full board
A Chairperson and members with their own areas — your home state, your subjects, current affairs, situations. Every sitting seats a different board.
- 4
Answer by speaking
It begins with your introduction, then questions drawn from it. Pause and the board moves on; keep talking and it stops to listen.
- 5
Expect follow-ups
A vague or one-sided answer gets probed, in your own words, the way a real member would — sometimes several questions later.
- 6
Read your report
A score out of the real interview marks, the six qualities the board judges, and a stronger answer for each question you were asked.

What the interview board is really testing
The personality test is not a knowledge quiz. These are the six qualities every report scores you on.
Clarity of expression
Can you say what you mean in two or three sentences, without circling? The board notices a candidate who answers the question asked.
Balance of judgement
On a contested issue, do you see both sides and still reach a view? One-sided answers and fence-sitting both cost marks.
Depth of knowledge
Not quiz facts, but real understanding of your own subjects, your district and the issues of the day.
Self-awareness from your DAF
Everything on your form is fair game. A candidate who cannot discuss their own hobby or job loses the board quickly.
Honesty and composure
"I am not sure, sir" is a respectable answer. Bluffing, and getting rattled when caught, are not.
Current affairs awareness
The board expects you to have followed the news and to connect it to governance — especially in your home state.
Where DAF-based interview questions come from
Most of a civil services interview is built from your Detailed Application Form. The mock board reads yours the same way and asks from every part of it.
Your name and family
What your name means, your parents’ work, and what growing up where you did taught you.
Home district and state
Its history, its economy, a well-known problem — and what you would do about it as an administrator.
Education and optional
A core concept from your graduation subject, and how your optional applies to a real policy question.
Work experience
What you did, what you learnt, and why you are leaving it for public service.
Hobbies and achievements
Asked by someone who knows the hobby well. Write only what you can discuss in depth.
Service preferences
Why that service first, and what you would do in your first posting.
How to prepare for the personality test
- Read your own DAF line by line and prepare three questions on every entry — especially the hobbies.
- Prepare a 60–90 second introduction that names one or two things you are happy to be asked about.
- Know your home district well: its geography, economy, a current scheme and one problem you have a view on.
- For opinion questions, give both sides in a sentence each, then state your own view and why.
- If you do not know, say so plainly and move on. The board respects honesty more than a guess.
- Practise speaking, not writing. An answer that reads well can still run too long out loud.
Mock interview in Hindi — हिंदी में साक्षात्कार की तैयारी
Many UPPSC and BPSC candidates, and a large share of UPSC candidates, sit their interview in Hindi. Choose Hindi and every board member asks in natural spoken Hindi, understands answers that mix in English terms, and writes your report in Hindi.
A board question, in Hindi
“आपने अपने परिचय में गोरखपुर का ज़िक्र किया। आपके ज़िले की सबसे बड़ी समस्या क्या है, और एक SDM के रूप में आप उसके लिए क्या करेंगे?”
A follow-up built from the candidate’s own introduction — the way the board opens every interview.

Questions candidates ask
Is the interview really by voice?
Yes. The board members speak their questions aloud and you answer through your microphone; your words appear on screen as you speak. If you cannot use a microphone you can type your answers instead.
Who is on the board?
An AI board: a Chairperson and three or four members, each with their own area of questioning and their own voice. The members are simulated, not real officers, and the names are invented for each sitting.
Do I need my DAF?
It makes the interview far more realistic, because most real questions come from it. If you do not have one yet, a short form covering your home district, education, hobbies and work does the same job.
What happens to the DAF I upload?
It is read once to fill in your profile and is not stored. Only the fields you confirm — name, district, education, hobbies and similar — are kept. Your address, category and identity numbers are never saved.
Can I give the mock interview in Hindi?
Yes. Choose Hindi and the whole board asks its questions in Hindi. You can answer in Hindi, or mix in English terms the way most candidates naturally do — the board understands both, and the report is written in Hindi too.
What if I pause to think and the board starts the next question?
Just carry on speaking. The board stops, listens, and what you say is added to the answer you were giving. The interrupted question is not counted against you.
How long does a mock interview take?
A quick round takes about 8–10 minutes: your introduction, one question from each member and a couple of follow-ups. A full board runs about 25–30 minutes, closer to the length of a real personality test.
How is the score decided?
The report is marked out of the real weight of the interview — 275 for UPSC, 100 for UPPSC, 120 for BPSC — and is anchored to the range real boards usually award. It is an estimate to guide your preparation, not a prediction of your actual marks.
Can I see my old interviews?
Yes. Every interview and its full report — score, feedback on each question and the transcript — stays in your account, and your dashboard shows your score trend and average across all of them.
Is it free?
Your first interview is free: a 5-minute quick round with the full report at the end. After that, each interview is ₹49 — a full board or a quick round, with no time limit.
